No More Double Coupons at Meijer?!

Meijer Sign 3.3.13

(photo credit to David on the Meijer Facebook Page)

It seems that signs like this one (pic above) have been popping up in Meijer stores this weekend announcing the end of double coupons at select Meijer stores. Apparently, Meijer will only be doubling coupon only on special double coupon days or weeks. Since Meijer has yet to put out an official press release regarding the end of double coupon we’re just guessing at this point as to how many stores will stop doubling coupons.

I was over at Meijer (Southfield, MI) today and did not see a sign like this. I did check both entrances to the stores so it seems that it is only at select stores.

I’ve added a Which Stores Double Coupons? page on this blog where I’ve started a list of the double coupon policies for many of the Meijer stores. Please take a look at it HERE and let me know if the double coupon policy is correct for your store or it you’ve seen a sign in your store saying that they will no longer be doubling coupons. If there is any correction to the list, please leave a comment below. I think this list will be very helpful to all of us in the future!

Not happy about the changes at Meijer? Please head on over to the Meijer Facebook page and let them know about it!

Thanks Amanda. I just added a link to their Facebook page.

I wrote on their FB wall a couple of weeks ago, about it and they didn’t seem to care one bit. I guess they will start to care when their profits start diminishing.

I called about Southern Indiana stores today (New Albany and Jeffersonville); I was told that they are not on the “list” of stores that are discontinuing doubles.

I was told last week, that Meijer was going to start cracking down on multiple transactions.

It is really quite disgusting, since we all know that the markup on items is quite a bit. Stores can definitely afford to double coupons; and as far as “every day low prices” I have yet to see any.

I saw this on another blog. Someone said they emailed Meijer and Meijer said that it is only occuring in select stores in the Michigan area (a few in KY too I think) for now. Sounds like a trial type of thing. I hope it doesn’t occur at the Ohio stores. Kroger just stopped doubling and there are no other stores in my immediate area that double except for Meijer.

    • Jennifer says:

The trend seemed to be that as soon as Kroger stopped doubling the other surrounding stores would follow. Some of the stores on the ‘list’ are in the Metro Detroit area and our Krogers have not announced a plan to stop doubling…so now I’m confused. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!

  4. tiffany says:

Blame that idiotic show “extreme couponing” for this too, that show has ruined coupon policies!

  5. Holi says:

Yeah on westside of MI they stopped doubles at least 10 yrs ago and I tend to think its longer & they never had special days or weeks that they would do. Seems like it changed when they ran the competition out of the area. Walmart came in and they still didn’t offer it back.

  6. Kelly says:

I was in the Mt. Pleasant Meijer yesterday and checked for signs, didn’t see anything regarding no more doubles.

    • Chandra says:

My Meijer didn’t have any signs either but they have already stopped. The cashier said that all Meijer stores will eventually not double.

I’m sure that meijer feels they do not need to double coupons anymore in the regions that had kroger stores. Normally a retailer does that in response to another store. I’m sure that this will roll out to other stores…its only a matter of time.

  9. Bekah says:

The only store which stopped doubling in my area is an independent. If my meijer jumps on this bandwagon I would just go to the doubling Kroger across the street or the doubling Indy around the corner.

kokomo more store will not double after March 30. called store last nite after readiing the news on another site

Kokomo store will no more double coupons after March 30. called store last nite when i read the news

I shop the Florence and Cold Spring, KY stores. I know the coupon wording is no longer on the back of the ad, however, they are still doubling. All of my coupons doubled yesterday and when I asked management at both locations I was told they haven’t heard anything about not doubling. There is also no signage stating that they will be cancelling the double coupons.

On that note, those two stores are about 15 minutes from the southern Ohio stores that do still double and have the coupon wording on the back of their ads. It would be silly to allow doubling at a store that is 15 minutes away and cancel it at another.

Also, Kroger in our area (Cincinnati and Northern KY) had stopped doubling coupons as of March 1st. Meijer would be INSANE to stop doubling until they see how much traffic they will be getting from Kroger’s misstep.

  12. michellle V says:

Sorry to hear that you will not be recieving the extra benefit of doubling but be happy your store was doubling as the Meijers in our area NEVER have. On occassion we have a Kmart that would double but haven’t seen that in quite some while. We still recieve pretty good not great deals without the benefit of the doubling

  13. Jill says:

The Meijer store in Maumee Ohio doubles coupons up to $.50; limit 2 ‘like’ coupons double per transaction. No signs, as of yesterday.

  14. Sarah says:

I live in West Michigan. Our Meijer used to double coupons many years ago, but stopped when our local grocery store stopped doubling. It really effected my grocery bill. Although many of us complained, they didn’t bring doubles back. I so wish they would!

  15. Shanna says:

I live in Northern Indiana & when I called the Goshen Meijers yesterday I was told they would be stopping double coupons March 30th also.

  16. Jenny says:

My Fort Wayne, IN store had the same sign up. My cashier said it was because, “Extreme couponers are abusing the system and doing things like using 2 coupons on a BOGO free deal.” Who knows if that’s the reason, but I’m so sad they are stopping this.

  17. Terrie says:

I coupon but I am always honest and don’t try to play the system
It’s the old saying….1 bad apple spoils the whole bunch

  18. Molly says:

I’m going to my local Meijer today here in Ohio. Hopefully I don’t find a sign! I know not everyone is a fan of Walmart, but if their CEOs are smart, they’ll start doubling coupons to bring in shoppers that previously shopped at places where doubling has stopped. Couponing in general has saved my family this past year. It wasn’t that long ago where we had to return groceries to the store we had just purchased in order to have money for gas and bills.

  19. Wendy says:

I was just at the Meijer in Goshen IN today, and they had the sign posted that they will no longer double coupons after 3/30/13. I will be writing them a letter expressing my disappointment. I go out of my way to go to Meijer, and pass at least 4 other grocery stores on my way to Meijer.

  20. Pam says:

I’d shopped in Meijer yesterday in Lexington KY and I didn’t see any signs. I agree with Molly, couponing has really saved my family this past year too. I always felt Meijer concern of their customers feelings than Kroger. Meijer changed their coupon policy within two days. I guess will see. I will have stock up before this happens.

  21. Christa H. says:

Lafayette IN is not going to double anymore.

  22. Melissa French says:

there is also a meijer in marion, IN they have never doubled coupons, just for the record

  23. Molly says:

Springfield, OH store had no signs. I asked my cashier and she said they haven’t heard anything about it yet.

  24. Michelle says:

Confirmed tonight the Mishawaka, IN store will no longer be doubling. I saw the dreaded sign… Sad thing is I went up to two of the store managers to express my disappointment and NEITHER knew yet what I was talking about. They asked me where the sign was where I saw it. (Ummm… at the front of YOUR store!) The cashier who happened to be standing by knew about it but not TWO of the store managers?

  25. Patty says:

Meijer in Battle Creek is on the list as being a doubling store, I noticed on the Meijer fb page they said that too…. BUT Battle Creek has not had doubles at Meijer for years! Sure would be nice, but I’m used to the land of no doubles.

  26. Jen says:

Oh no! This is the first I’ve heard of this. If Goshen and Mishawaka are doing away with doubles then I don’t hold out much hope for the Portage Rd. location 🙁 I drive 45 min to use double coupons at that store. I guess I will save money on gas if nothing else. Sad……just so sad 🙁

  27. Laura says:

I think rather than blame the TV show we need to look to ourselves. I have seen comments on here from readers who intentionally misuse coupons and I have seen posts for coupons that are not for the right products. It is never ok to use a coupon on a product it was not intended for. Also I don’t think Meijer’s competitor coupon wording was meant for store coupons. I think they were trying to clarify manufacturer coupons that say “redeem at…” I I realize Meijer is somewhat to blame as the wording is confusing. But some of you have managed to bully your cashiers into accepting them. If they were going to use store coupons they would have just kept their own. I know this post is going to be unpopular, but I don’t care. I have seen customers get rude with cashiers over coupons, fill their cart with everything on the shelf, and steal coupons off products. It is all the same mentality. I have been using coupons for over 25 years and this is the worst I’ve ever seen with people thinking they are owed something. There is nothing wrong with trying to stretch a dollar, but not at the expense of the rest of us.

    • Jennifer says:

I try to post all deals with proper coupon usage. I am human and I do make mistakes on deals, as do all coupon bloggers. We do not know all products and therefore make some mistakes along the way. Usually my readers correct me and I edit or remove a post so that other readers are not using coupons improperly.

As for the Competitor’s coupons being used at Meijer, this is the Meijer Corporate Coupon Policy, not one we ‘couponers’ made up. When the policy first came out I spoke with the Customer Service Manager at Meijer’s Corporate offices and she explained that Meijer was doing away with the Mealbox coupons and therefore decided to accept competitor’s coupons. She defined a competitor’s coupon as a coupon that can be used at a competitor’s store only (ie. not a manufacturer coupon) and a competitor would be in a 10-30 mile radius of the store. Meijer has done a poor job of educating their employees on the coupons policy and is also leaving the decision to accept competitor’s coupons (as well as who is and who isn’t a competitor) up to each individual store manager. This is just causing confusion for all Meijer shoppers on the coupon policy and unfortunately they are handling the discontinuation of doubling coupons in a similarly poor customer relations fashion.

I agree that there is no reason for a shopper to be rude to a cashier but on the other hand, I have been treated rudely by Meijer cashier many, many, many more times that I have ever been rude to a cashier.

      • Jennifer says:

Ditto on everything you just said Jennifer! If company’s would take the time to educate their employees – many of these problems would not exist. I coupon ethically and I have been sighed at, had eyes rolled at me and literally been called a thief by one cashier because with my coupon I was getting the ONE item for free! I am never rude to a cashier but I do carry the stores’ official coupon policy with me and firmly demand they honor their rules. I follow blogs like this one because they promote the correct way to coupon.

And by the way, I do feel I am owed something. I am owed the right to legally use a coupon the way the store officially says I can. I am owed the dignity of trying to stay in my family’s budget without be subject to ridicule or offensive behavior. Your darn tootin’ I feel I’m owed something!

  28. Shelly says:

I just called the Ypsi (Carpenter Road) and 2 Ann Arbor Stores (Ann Arbor Saline Rd and Jackson Rd). All 3 of these locations WILL CONTINUE to double coupons!

  29. Chris says:

I just got off the phone with Belleville/Van Buren Michigan store and they WILL still be doubling !!!!!!!!

  30. Tim Kwast says:

Grand Ledge Meijer has the new sign today.

  31. Michele says:

Please update your list to reflect that the Meijer store in Muncie, Indiana has announced that it will no longer double coupons after March 30th. There are signs to this effect at the store entrances.

This announcement was swiftly followed by one from Marsh Supermarket saying that they will also stop doubling coupons in Muncie, Indiana.
